Aussie born Line (pronounced Lyn) began her musical journey as a child on clarinet but after ten years of study and then going on to train as a Registered Nurse Line admitted that her secret ambition had always been to sing. So whilst living in Sydney and working as a nurse Line began studying with well-known Sydney teacher Robert Bickerstaffe who served as a principal at London's Royal Opera House. On returning to Perth Line continued her vocal studies with local teacher Gloria Wilson and sang as a chorus member for several local productions including The Student Prince, Music Theatre Company, under the direction of Kevin Roach and musical direction of Ian Westrip as well as some Gilbert & Sullivan productions including Yeoman of the Guard and Pirates of Penzance. During this period Line was also awarded several 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in a variety of categories of the Perth Eisteddfods. For most of this period Line continued with her nursing whilst developing her musical and vocal skills. Eventually the intricacies of Jazz music and its fascinating history wove a magic spell around Line and in 1989 she began studying with well-known Australian Jazz vocalist, Helen Matthews. This new journey eventually took Line to the UK and America giving her opportunities to study and work with some of the great jazz vocalists of today including Norma Winstone, Sheila Jordan, Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling, Madeline Eastman, Cleo Laine and Anita Wardell. Whilst living in London Line sang on the London cafe/bar scene, for private & corporate functions with various jazz and commercial bands and played percussion in the London School of Samba (a Brazilian Samba band like those found in Rio de Janeiro) for private & corporate functions and International festivals including the Notting Hill Carnival (London) and Queen's Day (Amsterdam). In 1996 Line returned home to Australia to undertake further musical studies at the Western Australian Conservatorium of Music, graduating four years later with a degree in Music Education, majoring in jazz music. Line also took on several roles in the local music industry including Coordinator of "Women in Music" for the Western Australian Music Industry Association (WAMI), Program Coordinator of "Sisters in Jazz" a mentoring program for young female jazz musicians for the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) (Australian Sector) and as Education Coordinator for Voice Moves, an association for community choirs. Line was also regularly called upon to sit in as a panel judge for several annual Statewide song writing and performance competitions with WAMI and "The Next Big Thing". Whilst at home Line performed when she could in and around Perth with her band and as feature vocalist for the Western Australian Conservatory Big Band. After graduating Line lived in New York City for a year to get that "New York Experience" and build on the riches she gathered through out her musical career. Part of that "experience" included attending as many concerts and gigs as possible, sitting in regularly with local NYC jazz bands and a three month residency at Archers Restaurant with her own guitar trio on the upper East side. In addition Line took voice lessons with Speech Level Singing (SLS) teacher Badiene Magaziner and decided to also certify as a SLS teacher herself through Seth Riggs its creator in Los Angeles. Now certified and back in London Line is recording her first album and building a reputation as a performer and teacher. Like so many performers today Line has an eclectic background in music, art and life with an ongoing commitment to evolve as a performer, a teacher and most of all... as an individual. |
