Wanted: Singers for MSc Research project

Are you a contemporary or classical singer? Would you be interested in helping me to do a world’s first comparative study for my MSc Performing Arts Medicine research project at UCL?

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 20.43.31My study will identify and compare what occurs in female singers from both Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) and classical genres as they successfully transition through their range from the chest register into the head register. I will be comparing and contrasting individual voices as they sing on a major scale using the sound “AH” by measuring the relative height of the larynx, cord closure, formant frequencies and possibly percentage of vocal fold mass during closure. This will be done in a non-invasive manner using an EGG machine called a Laryngograph. You will be required to sing into a microphone which is linked to a software program and measurements are done from two electrode pads that sit on the surface of your skin at the larynx.

This study has been approved of by the UCL Ethical Board, Feb 2012.
